Cardiff centre Immanuel Feyi-Waboso is set to leave the club imminently as he begins a medicine degree at Aston University in the West Midlands.
The 18-year-old signed a professional contract last December having impressed throughout the Cardiff age grade system and for Clifton College where he attended for his A-Levels, missing out on representing Wales U20 in last season’s U20 Six Nations to concentrate on his exams.
He had hoped to attend Cardiff University and continue playing rugby alongside his studies, in a similar way to Jamie Roberts, Hallam Amos and Ioan Davies have in recent years, but was placed on the reserve list for a place and did not get offered a spot on the course despite representations to the University from Cardiff and the Welsh Rugby Union.
He has instead taken up a place at Aston University on their medicine course and, although Academy Manager Gruff Rees has attempted to get him a placement at Coventry RFC in the Greene King Championship before a possible transfer of his studies from Aston to Cardiff next summer, it seems likely that he will leave the club shortly.
It is believed that his family’s focus on studies and lack of interest in rugby have not helped attempts to keep him playing rugby in Wales.
Feyi-Waboso made his first team debut away at the Ospreys in the Rainbow Cup last season and also came off the bench against Harlequins in pre-season. It is not known whether he will continue playing rugby in the West Midlands but Wasps are thought to be keeping tabs on the situation.
