Cardiff Rugby will put out an U17 squad for the first time since 2018 over the next few weeks as the development pathway recovers from the coronavirus pandemic.
Having missed the entirety of the 2020/21 campaign there was no opportunity for the usual U16 Regional Age Grade Championship as players step up from the Dewar Shield schools competition into sides directly controlled by Wales’ four professional teams, plus Rygbi Gogledd Cymru.
Cardiff were able to have a good U16 training block during May and June though, culminating in a behind closed doors U16 South v U16 North game taking place, and on the back of that have entered one combined U17 side in a mini-series with the Dragons and RGC.
The coaching staff will be headed up by Chadd Mutyambizi, who is assisted by Catrina Nicholas (forwards) from Coleg y Cymoedd, Dr Gethin Thomas (defence) from Cardiff Met, Gareth Bowen (attack) from Cynon Valley Schools and Llyr Davies (skills) from Cardiff Schools.
They will lead the side into a fixture away at Dragons Black in Ystrad Mynach next Wednesday, the 18th, before hosting Dragons Red at the Arms Park seven days later and then going North to play RGC on Sunday 29th.
