Cardiff Blues U18s set for return to on-field action

Cardiff Blues U18s will return to competitive action over the next two weeks with a mini set of fixtures against Dragons U18 and Scarlets U18.

The games start this Sunday as Craig Everett’s men host Scarlets in the capital, before facing the Dragons at Ystrad Mynach the following Sunday. Another away game follows four days later when we travel to Parc y Scarlets for that return match, before the fixtures come to a close against the Dragons at The Wern on Monday 28th.

Speaking to the Cardiff Blues matchday programme ahead of the Zebre clash, Talent Pathway Manager Aled James said “It’s been an extraordinary year in development rugby, where we’ve had to deal with long periods of inactivity. Therefore it’s been up to us to identify boys in our system who were able to come in, train with the academy and gave us an opportunity to have a look at them.

“What we’ve gone through is our depth chart regarding players that are available to us for the U18 side. They’ve been in with us for six weeks, and starting from June we’re lucky to have special dispensation to play some proper fixtures. That’s something that’s absolutely needed for both their development but also to put a purpose and a focus on their training.

“We’ve agreed to play some of the Academy boys in a couple of the fixtures to give them a chance to play against their peers from other clubs.”

James also revealed that the plan is to run an U17 programme from August in order to give players who have missed their U16 season due to the pandemic the chance to impress.
