The four South African sides involved in the Guinness Pro14’s Rainbow Cup will now not travel to Europe due to coronavirus travel restrictions.
With the country on the red list for the majority of European countries due to their highly infectious strain of covid-19, the Bulls, Stormers, Lions and Sharks will not be able to fulfil their fixtures against the Welsh, Irish, Scottish and Italian opposition, with a back-up plan of basing sides in the Middle East not proving feasible.
As a result the tournament will now split, as the South Africans take part in Rainbow Cup SA, their fourth inter-country competition of the last year, while the 12 northern hemisphere sides will compete in what is essentially a mini-Pro14.
Cardiff Blues will play the three Welsh sides as planned over the first three rounds, with fixtures for the subsequent three rounds to be announced shortly.
