Cardiff Blues have announced that forwards coach Tom Smith has left his role following the conclusion of the 2020/21 Guinness Pro14 campaign.
The 35-year-old arrived at the Arms Park in the summer of 2018 as part of John Mulvihill’s new coaching staff, having been an Academy coach at the Ospreys since retiring from playing with the Swansea based side due to injury in 2015.
Smith oversaw some tough years as the Cardiff Blues pack struggled for physicality and the lineout wobbled, but a dramatic corner was turned this season in both areas while the defensive breakdown was a real weapon throughout his tenure.
As he was out-of-contract in the summer and a new deal was not forthcoming, with Dai Young set to oversee the forwards coaching after his appointment as Director of Rugby, it was decided to go separate ways now ahead of the Rainbow Cup starting.
Also leaving the coaching staff is Cardiff Blues Academy strength and conditioning coach Will Cusack who heads for pastures new after three years in his current role, having previously been an S&C intern with the first team.
The former Glamorgan Wanderers and Hartpury conditioner, who has spent time with Wales 7s and age grade setups, has also held an S&C role with Cardiff RFC since the summer of 2019.
