Cardiff Blues will face Ospreys, Dragons and Scarlets in the first three rounds of the Guinness Pro14’s Rainbow Cup competition starting next month.
Due to concerns over the South African variant of coronavirus and having sides from Europe travelling down to the southern hemisphere, the original format of having two pools of eight teams has been shelved with all sides in one league and playing six games. The top two sides will then compete in the Rainbow Cup Final.
The first three rounds of fixtures will be derbies, as Cardiff Blues travel to Ospreys on the weekend of the 24th April, before hosting Dragons on the weekend of the 8th May and then heading to Scarlets on the weekend of 15th May.
Fixtures will then resume with the final three rounds played over the weekends of the 29th May, 5th June and 12th June. It is hoped that the South African sides will be able to travel to Europe by then, meaning Cardiff Blues will play one of the Bulls, Sharks, Stormers or Lions, as well as two sides from the existing 12 European entrants.
Confirmed fixture details for the first three rounds will be announced once broadcast partners have decided on the scheduling, while the final three rounds of games will be confirmed once all appropriate travel approvals have been gained from the relevant authorities and governments.
