The Cardiff Blues Academy has signed three new players from the age grade ranks as the trend of investing in the future of younger prospects continues.
All three should have been in their second years at U18 level this season, having played bit-parts during last year’s Regional Age Grade Championship triumph, but have impressed enough during that time, for their colleges and during training this season to earn a contract.
Rhys Barratt is a tighthead prop who started out at Llantwit Fardre RFC before playing for Pontypridd Schools, Cardiff Blues U16 North and then on to the Cardiff Blues U18 squad, as well as playing for Coleg y Cymoedd last season.
Cameron Winnett is a fellow Cymoedd pupil who started the WRU College League Final against Coleg Gwent last season, having started out at Treorchy RFC before playing for Rhondda Schools, Cardiff Blues U16 North and Cardiff Blues U18. Predominantly a full-back, Winnett also started at outside centre for the U18s last season.
Finally, Gwilym Evans is the current 1st XV captain at Ysgol Glantaf who has played for Cardiff Schools and Cardiff Blues U16 South, as well as representing Wales Rugby League U16s having captained Glantaf RL to the Year 7 Champion Schools title at Wembley in 2015. The openside flanker will combine his rugby with a place at Cardiff University next year.
