European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) have confirmed the next stages of the European Challenge Cup after the final two rounds of pool games were cancelled last month.
With restrictions placed on French club sides by their government the pool stage could not be completed so EPCR have decided that both the Challenge Cup and the Heineken Champions Cup will proceed to a round of 16.
The qualifiers will be decided by the pool standings as they stand after two rounds of games, meaning Cardiff Blues will progress to the next round of the Challenge Cup after the win over Newcastle Falcons and the walkover victory against Stade Francais after the Paris side withdrew from the fixture.
We will be joined by the rest of the top eight from the Challenge Cup and the sides ranked 17th to 24th in the Heineken Cup with our opponents decided by a draw on Tuesday 9th March. Dai Young’s men will not be able to draw any other Guinness Pro14 sides in the round of 16.
As a result the possible opposition are London Irish, Leicester Tigers, Newcastle Falcons, Northampton Saints, Harlequins, Bath, Montpellier or Agen.
London Irish and Leicester Tigers are guaranteed home games courtesy of completing and winning both of their pool games so far, the other teams can be played home or away.
Ties will be played on Easter weekend, the weekend of 2nd/3rd/4th April.
