Ioan Davies joins the Dragons on loan

Cardiff Blues Academy full-back Ioan Davies has joined the Dragons on loan to offer a boost to their back three stocks and get himself some valuable game time.

The 21-year-old, who is also comfortable on the wing, will compete with Jordan Williams for the 15 jersey at Rodney Parade with Jonah Holmes still missing through concussion and Will Talbot-Davies out for a lengthy spell following a dislocated wrist sustained against the Ospreys last month.

Davies, a medical student at Cardiff University, has struggled to get an opportunity in the first team at Cardiff Blues since impressing for Wales U20 at the 2019 World Rugby U20 Championships, where his performances, running style and scrum cap wearing earned him comparisons with Leigh Halfpenny.

He has turned out 14 times for Cardiff RFC, been involved with Cardiff Blues A’s Celtic Cup campaign and made his Guinness Pro14 debut last February off the bench against Edinburgh before making a second appearance as a replacement against the Ospreys when rugby restarted in August.

Davies now heads for the Dragons where, if his loan spell is successful, he could sign permanently as his Academy terms come to an end this summer.
