European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) the organising body of European rugby competition have announced a temporary suspension of the Heineken Champions Cup and European Challenge Cup.
A statement explained that “following a directive from the French authorities that the participation of TOP14 clubs in the Heineken Champions Cup and Challenge Cup at the current time constitutes too great a public health risk, EPCR has no choice but to announce on Monday, 11 January that the 2020/21 tournaments are temporarily suspended.”
It means Cardiff Blues’ fixtures against Stade Francais Paris and Newcastle Falcons have been postponed, with no word yet on what the rest of the European Challenge Cup will look like. There are four weeks left for European action across April and May, with the Welsh capital side currently sitting third in the pool stage table.
With those two games off though it leaves the potential for Cardiff to be without a fixture until the weekend of 20th February, having had no games cancelled during the first block of Guinness Pro14 games and therefore not needing to have any re-arranged fixtures.
There is talk of moving Welsh derbies, either Pro14 or friendly games, to the weekend of the 23rd January, but as of right now Dai Young is facing a long wait for his first game in charge in his second spell.
