Ref Watch: An unlikely good omen

Posted by

Cardiff Blues’ final Monday night fixture in the Guinness Pro14 against Benetton tonight will be refereed by Irish official Frank Murphy.

The 38-year-old former Munster, Connacht and Leicester scrum-half will take charge of his 39th game in the competition, having made his debut at Rodney Parade in a Dragons v Edinburgh fixture back in November 2016.

It will be the tenth time Murphy has refereed a Cardiff Blues game, with six wins coming from them. He has taken charge of five Benetton games with the Italians winning three times, although he has never seen them win away from home.

The good news for us is that Murphy was in the middle when the two sides met at the Arms Park earlier this calendar year, overseeing a 34-24 win for John Mulvihill’s men which happened to be on the back of a defeat where we were nil’d.

So far this season he has refereed two games in the Pro14, home wins for Zebre over Ospreys and Glasgow over Scarlets, showing four yellow cards and a red card.

Murphy will be assisted by Welshmen Dan Jones and Adams Jones, while Ian Davies will act as the Television Match Official.
