Mathew Powell becomes latest Blue and Black departure

Cardiff RFC winger Mathew Powell is the fifth player to confirm their departure from the Arms Park as he heads for Newport RFC when rugby returns.

The 26-year-old follows new Bridgend Ravens signings Kieran Martin, Zach O’Driscoll and Joe Gatt, and Merthyr’s Gareth Thompson, out the door as the Blue and Blacks side that won the Specsavers Cup in 2019 continues to head for pastures new.

Powell signed for Cardiff in the summer of 2018 from Cross Keys and quickly became a regular feature in the starting XV, making 22 appearances during that campaign, 20 from the start, scoring seven tries in all competitions.

Unfortunately knee surgery ruled him out of the curtailed 2019/20 season, but back fit he has now headed for Rodney Parade ahead of the Indigo Group Premiership getting up and running again.
