Irish official Frank Murphy will take charge of Saturday’s game between Cardiff Blues and Edinburgh at the Arms Park, his 25th game in the competition since his debut in November 2016.
Just like last week when Mike Adamson refereed our win over Southern Kings, it is a former scrum-half in the middle, with Murphy having appeared for Connacht, Munster and Leicester during his playing days, winning Ireland A and U21 honours along the way.
This will be his first outing of the season, having last refereed Munster v Connacht in the final round of the 2018/19 campaign.
Across the League and European Challenge Cup Murphy has refereed seven Cardiff Blues games in the last three years, with five wins coming from them, three of which were at home to Dragons, Zebre and Lyon respectively.
One of the away wins, and indeed the most recent Cardiff Blues game he has officiated, was the win over Saturday’s opponents Edinburgh back in February. A fantastic second half comeback securing the 17-19 victory.
All-in-all he has issues four yellow cards to Cardiff Blues players, three coming in one game against Zebre, with his overall stats showing him as low on the list of card happy referees.
In this calendar year he has refereed five games, showing five cards, four of which came in an 18-18 draw between Dragons and Kings at Rodney Parade.
Murphy will be assisted on Saturday by fellow Irishman Rob O’Sullivan and Welsh official Ben Whitehouse, with Olly Hodges of Ireland acting as the Television Match Official.
