Warren Gatland has named his matchday 23 for Wales’ first World Cup pool game against Georgia at the Toyota Stadium on Monday.
Alun Wyn Jones captains the side and is set to equal the record for most Wales test appearances, with Jake Ball packing down alongside him in the second row as Adam Beard (appendix) and Cory Hill (leg) are ruled out.
Perhaps the major selection surprise is Wyn Jones getting the nod at loosehead prop ahead of Nicky Smith, something that wouldn’t have been predicted even a month ago with Smith and Rob Evans the clear favourites to battle it out for the number one jersey.
In the back row we see Ross Moriarty on the bench as Aaron Wainwright is included after impressive performances in the warm-up games, with Josh Navidi shifted around to wear number eight.
Meanwhile at fly-half Gatland opts for the safe hands of Dan Biggar to guide the back line after a week in which the backs and attack coach Rob Howley was sent home from the tournament.
On the bench Aaron Shingler will cover the second row, while Leigh Halfpenny is named as the outside back with no clear centre cover should one of Hadleigh Parkes or Jon Davies not be able to complete the game.
