Cardiff Blues A will put out a strong team to face Dragons A on Saturday as the Celtic Cup clash becomes more of a pre-season game with the Guinness Pro14 on the horizon.
After naming squads made up of a majority of Indigo Group Premiership players over the last two weeks, Gethin Jenkins and T Rhys Thomas have brought a number of first team faces into a squad of 25 who are preparing for the weekend’s game.
Will Davies-King and Ioan Davies are the only survivors from the starting XV who lined up out in Belfast last Saturday for the defeat to Ulster A, the second loss after falling to Leinster A in round one at the Arms Park.
Up front Davies-King is joined in the front row by Corey Domachowski and Liam Belcher, with Ben Murphy partnering up with the experienced member of the pack, Macauley Cook, in the second row.
The back row sees the exciting young trio of Shane Lewis-Hughes, James Botham and Alun Lawrence team up for hopefully the first of many appearances together in a Cardiff Blues jersey, with Lawrence leading the side from number eight.
In the backs Lewis Jones gets the nod at scrum-half, where he will be joined by Dan Fish at half-back, with the coaches continuing to take a look at him in the number 10 jersey.
Garyn Smith is named at inside centre, with Harri Millard outside him, while first team wingers Jason Harries and Aled Summerhill join Davies in an attacking back three.
There are further senior players named amongst the replacements, with Brad Thyer, Ethan Lewis, Scott Andrews, Rory Thornton, Seb Davies and Matthew Morgan named alongside new signings Will Boyde and Jason Tovey.
Youngsters Jamie Hill and Ben Thomas are also included, although two of the replacements will not feature on matchday with squads of 23 being named.
Dmitri Arhip, Willis Halaholo and Nick Williams were unavailable due to tournament regulations, while Rhys Gill, Kris Dacey, Josh Turnbull and Olly Robinson were ruled out due to injury.
With only one official pre-season game for Cardiff Blues before the Pro14 starts away at Kings at the end of the month, this is being seen as a first team warm-up as well as a Celtic Cup clash with Dragons also expected to bring a strong side to the Arms Park.
This game comes at the end of the Summerfest event, with face painting, inflatables, player-led masterclasses, stadium tours, player signings and a first chance to see the new home jersey all on offer, as well as Wales v Ireland on the big screen.
Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children, available here, with season ticket holders gaining free entry either with last season’s card or by requesting a paper ticket from the ticket office.
