Cardiff RFC prepare for final pre-season clash

Steve Law takes his Cardiff RFC side back to his old stomping ground of Bedwas RFC on Friday night as pre-season comes to a close for the Blue and Blacks.

The head coach spent 16 seasons in charge at Bridge Field, before leaving to take over at the Arms Park in the summer of 2017, leading us to second in the Indigo Group Premiership and lifting the Specsavers Cup last season.

The two sides have faced each other home and away in both of the last two seasons, with Bedwas doing the double in 2017/18 before Cardiff claimed the double in 2018/19.

Unfortunately Friday’s hosts were one of the four teams relegated at the end of last season, and are now preparing for life in the Championship, having already beaten Marlborough and Bedlinog in pre-season friendlies.

Cardiff will once again have to do without a number of players who have been called up to the Cardiff Blues A squad, as Evan Yardley, James Ratti, Callum Bradbury, Nathan Hudd, Morgan Allen, Gareth Thompson, Sam Beard, Barney Nightingale and Thomas Davies travel to Belfast to face Ulster A.

However, there will still be a strong starting XV turning out at Bridge Field, with Edd Howley, Joe Scrivens and Zach O’Driscoll named in the team having played in the Celtic Cup last week.

As well as Scrivens, new signings Brynley Toms, Scott Andrews, Lloyd Pike and Ben Williams start, while Jack Brooks, Leon Andrews and Amir Jiwa-Walji are picked having played for the Blue and Blacks previously.

Cardiff Blues Academy’s Teddy Williams packs down at lock, while Nathan Huish is on permit at hooker.

Attention then turns to the Premiership campaign getting underway next Friday, as Pontypridd travel down the A470 to the Arms Park.
