All three of Cardiff Blues’ academy sides face some tricky away games in the first half of the season as the Regional Age Grade Championship gets underway this week.
Cardiff Blues U18 get the action going tonight (Tuesday) as they look to improve on an encouraging 2018/19 campaign, the first since the ill-fated trial of having geographically split U18 teams.
They travel to Ystrad Mynach to take on a Dragons team producing plenty of national age grade players at the moment, with a 7.30pm kick-off, before taking the field again on Sunday when they host RGC U18 at Sardis Road.
The first half of the season then comes to a close on Tuesday 10th September away to Ospreys, with the game being held at Aberavon RFC’s Talbot Athletic Ground, again a 7.30pm kick-off.
Reigning back-to-back champions Cardiff Blues U16 North are the next team to get their season underway tomorrow (Wednesday) night when they also travel to Ystrad Mynach to face Dragons U16 Red, kick-off at 7.15pm.
The North side are unbeaten for each of the last two seasons and host Ospreys U16 East next Wednesday, 4th September, at Sardis Road, also a 7.15pm kick-off, before travelling to Scarlets U16 East on Wednesday 18th September with venue and kick-off details to be confirmed.
Runners-up, and unbeaten outside of inter-regional derbies, for the last two years, Cardiff Blues U16 South, have to wait until Sunday to get their campaign going, making the long trip to Colwyn Bay to face RGC U16 at 2.30pm.
They then play for each of the next three Wednesdays, hosting Scarlets U16 East at the Arms Park on the 4th, travelling to Bridgend RFC’s Brewery Field to play Ospreys U16 East on the 11th, before returning to the Arms Park to face Ospreys U16 West on the 18th, all 7.15pm kick-offs.
However, come through the first half of the season in contention then there is a chance to push towards the top of their respective tables, with nine of the 14 combined games in the second half of the campaign being played within the Cardiff Blues region.
