Cardiff Blues Women secured their first win of the Women’s Regional Championship with an eight-try showing against Merched RGC at Rhyl RFC.
It was the perfect fashion in which to bounce back from last weekend’s disappointing opening day defeat to Scarlets Women at Llandarcy, and sees the side go into a final round clash against undefeated reigning champions Ospreys Women with plenty of confidence.
Head coach Darren Bool had made five changes to the team that lost in that game against Scarlets, with one of those crossing for the opening score of the game as fly-half Millie Williams grabbed a try, before winger Paige Randall doubled the lead after beating five defenders to get over the whitewash.
RGC got themselves back into the game as former Cardiff Blues player Bethan Davies scored and converted her own try, but a two quickfire tries just before the break from Rebekah O’Loughlin and Randall saw the visitors lead 7-20 at half-time.
The second half was all Cardiff Blues though, with both wingers battling for the top try scorer crown as Randall got on the end of a crosskick to secure her hat-trick, while O’Loughlin bagged two more for a hat-trick of her own which, when added to her try last week, keeps her just in front.
A further try from Seren Gough-Walters and the boot of Wales international Robyn Wilkins off the bench saw the final score stand at 7-48, and the Cardiff Blues team made the long trip back to South Wales with maximum points in their back pocket.
That final round game against Ospreys is now due to take place at Cardiff Arms Park on Sunday 1st September.
