Wales Sevens duo Cai Devine and Dafydd Smith have linked up with Cardiff Blues A for the Celtic Cup which gets underway a week on Saturday at home to Leinster A.
They boost the options available to coaches Gethin Jenkins and T Rhys Thomas ahead of the seven-week long tournament, and feeds into the Sevens pathway which aims to see players follow in the footsteps of Sam Cross and Luke Morgan in making it in the 15-a-side game.
Both players have formerly had links with Cardiff Blues, as lock/back-rower Devine returns to the A team setup having played for us during last year’s inaugural Celtic Cup competition.
The 21-year-old was born and raised in Singapore, before returning to family roots in Wales to attend Llandovery College. He was picked up by the Sevens programme while playing for Durham University, and has played at 16 events to date.
Smith, on the other hand, is a Cardiff Blues academy graduate, having still been contracted at the Arms Park as recently as last season, before making the step across to become a centrally contracted Wales Sevens player.
The 20-year-old centre/wing hails from Penarth and attended Cardiff and Vale College, playing for the first XV alongside playing regional age grade rugby, as well as scoring one try in 11 appearances for Cardiff RFC.
He made his HSBC World Sevens Series debut at the end of the 2017/18 season, featuring regularly during the last campaign.
There are plenty of Cardiff Blues links to Wales Sevens players teamed up with other regions too, as former academy graduates Ben Roach and Owen Jenkins head to the Dragons, while Cameron Lewis goes to Ospreys having only been released last season.
Former Dragons winger George Gasson is also at the Ospreys, while Wales Sevens captain Luke Treharne and coach Richie Pugh have been teamed up with the Scarlets.
