Cardiff Blues have brought in Wales U19 second row Anthony Cox on a short-term deal covering pre-season and the Celtic Cup competition.
The 19-year-old was released by the Academy last summer having been a member of the Cardiff Blues U18 South squad during the time the U18 programme was split by geography, and also playing for Cardiff & Vale College’s 1st XV in the WRU College League.
Following that he was snapped up by CAVC’s 1st XV Director of Rugby Martyn Fowler in his other role with Glamorgan Wanderers, helping the Wanderers win Division One East Central and beat Brecon in a play-off to return to the WRU National Championship.
Cox also made a try-scoring substitute appearance for Cardiff RFC in the first round of the WRU National Cup against Tata Steel, and was selected to start for Wales U19 in a game against a Japan High Schools XV in March.
Standing at 6ft9 and weighing around 120kg he has the ideal frame for a powerful lock, with Fowler noting on Twitter he “now has to display high ability to think like a pro player, assess threats and opportunities at the lineout, and generally throughout the game.”
He will likely compete with Ben Murphy, Callum Bradbury and Teddy Williams for a spot in the Cardiff Blues A second row, as well as experienced heads James Down and Macauley Cook.
