The Cardiff Blues squad as it stands

Posted by

So, after six announcements in just 24 hours, the squad for next season has properly started to take shape, and it appears there will no be no further departures from the Cardiff Blues.

However, we are still waiting for news on recruitment, and frustration continues to grow on social media at the lack of progress in that area.

At the time of writing only the previously announced Josh Adams and Hallam Amos are confirmed as arriving at the Arms Park over the summer, as we deal with the fallout from losing Rhys Carre to Saracens and Gareth Anscombe to the Ospreys.

With the full list of departures now confirmed, I’ve had a look at what the squad currently looks like before Cardiff Blues hopefully begin a raft of announcements.

In the squad I have included academy players who will be labelled as either ‘senior academy (SA)’, if I feel they are in line to make an impact on the first team next season, or just ‘academy (A)’ if they are still involved in the development pathway.

Loosehead: Brad Thyer, Rhys Gill, Corey Domachowski, Garyn Phillips (A)

Hooker: Kris Dacey, Kirby Myhill, Ethan Lewis, Liam Belcher, Iestyn Harris (SA), Cam Lewis (A)

Tighthead: Dmitri Arhip, Dillon Lewis, Scott Andrews, Kieron Assiratti, Will Davies-King (SA), Ben Warren (A)

Second Row: Seb Davies, Macauley Cook, James Down, Ben Murphy, Callum Bradbury (SA), Teddy Williams (A)

Back Row: Ellis Jenkins, Josh Navidi, Nick Williams, Josh Turnbull, Olly Robinson, James Botham, Shane Lewis-Hughes, Alun Lawrence (SA), Ioan R Davies (A), Callun James (A)

Scrum-Half: Tomos Williams, Lloyd Williams, Lewis Jones, Jamie Hill (SA)

Fly-Half: Jarrod Evans, Rhys Davies (A)

Centre: Willis Halaholo, Rey Lee-Lo, Garyn Smith, Harri Millard, Ben Thomas (SA), Max Llewellyn (SA)

Back Three: Josh Adams, Hallam Amos, Owen Lane, Aled Summerhill, Jason Harries, Tom James, Matthew Morgan, Dan Fish, Rhun Williams, Ioan Davies (SA), Alex Varney (A)

That puts the squad size currently at 39 senior contracted players, then I’ve got a further eight in the ‘senior academy’ section who could make the step up to the first team during 2019/20, especially after a successful Celtic Cup campaign, as well as a another eight academy players probably a year or two away still.

Not the biggest squad by any means, and with some noticeable gaps at loosehead, second row and fly-half. Time to get recruiting!
