Coleg y Cymoedd claim back-to-back titles

Coleg y Cymoedd lifted the WRU College League title on Tuesday night after overcoming old rivals Coleg Sir Gar at Pontypridd’s Sardis Road.

It means Cymoedd now have back-to-back College League wins for the second time, and their fourth triumph in the last five years, with a record of played 12, won 11 and lost just once this season.

For the sixth season in a row it was West Wales side Coleg Sir Gar who were the opponents in the Final, extending their own run of Final appearances to nine in a row, and they found themselves ahead at the break.

Hooker Rhodri King opened the scoring as the beneficiary at the back of a driving maul after just six minutes, before Cymoedd’s winger Cavan Davies hit back, finishing in the corner after a good long pass from outside-half Tyler Morris. However, Sir Gar hit back before the break when Jack Tregoning chipped over for Bradley Roderick before feeding Ilan Phillips.

That lead was extended to 10-19 just after half-time, when Callum Williams benefitted from a spilled high ball to race over, but Cymoedd were not out of it just yet.

Morris kicked a penalty before being replaced by Lloyd Wilkins, and the subsititute made an instant impact with a try after an inch perfect cross kick had sent Iwan Price-Thomas down the right wing before offloading inside.

Wilkins then kicked a penalty to nudge his side ahead before the game was made safe with two minutes to go when he put in a speculative high cross kick that bounced perfectly for Cardiff Blues U18’s Will Clapham to touch down, the final score 28-19 to Cymoedd.

An excellent Final with Cymoedd and Cardiff Blues U18 captain Ieuan Pring lifting the trophy to cap off a fine season for the team led by Cardiff Blues U16 North head coach Lee Davies.
