Cardiff Blues Women opened up their season with a strong showing at the ‘Super 5s’ event at Swansea RFC’s St Helens on Sunday.
All five regions competed in the event which saw them each play four shortened, high-paced games that followed a summer of intense pre-season conditioning and skills training run by Wales Women head coach Rowland Phillips and his staff.
It was a strong start for the Cardiff Blues Women, after an impressive showing in last year’s Womens Regional Championship, and the results seemed to mirror that campaign on Sunday.
The day started with a defeat to the only side that beat us last season, as Ospreys cruised to a 5-27 on their home patch, but after that the Cardiff Blues went on a winning streak for the rest of the event.
Dragons were dispatched 17-0, with RGC following thanks to a 10-0 scoreline, before the day was rounded off with a 19-10 over Scarlets, as Cardiff Blues registered a points difference of +36 in the last three games.
They now head into the season proper, with the format changing this season to allow five consecutive weeks of Women’s Regional Championship action before Rowland Phillips picks his Wales side for the to-be-confirmed Autumn Internationals, which will then link in with the Six Nations just after Christmas.
