Reinforcements arrive in South Africa

Cardiff Blues have been boosted by the arrival of three additions to the South African touring party this week, as Gethin Jenkins, Corey Domachowski and Nick Williams have joined up with their team-mates in Cape Town.

After a physical encounter with Edinburgh in the European Challenge Cup quarter-final before heading to the southern hemisphere, Danny Wilson chose to leave the experience of Williams and Jenkins at home for a week of recovery ahead of some important fixtures at the culmination of the season.

Domachowski, on the other hand, hasn’t featured outside of Anglo-Welsh Cup action since December, instead playing predominantly for Pontypridd in the Welsh Premiership. He has made the journey out to Africa though, and will provide resilience in the front row.

In typical Cardiff Blues fashion, the three players actually suffered a two hour delay on the way out to South Africa from the UK, but fortunately that was as bad as it got, with memories of the last week’s 36 hour delay still fresh in the memory.

They joined up with the squad on Monday as those who were already out there have been recovering from that travel nightmare and going straight in to Saturday’s agonising loss to Cheetahs at the Toyota Stadium.

Players, coaches and staff have been seeing the sites of Cape Town, including climbing Table Mountain and visiting Robben Island, before getting back to work on Tuesday for the fixture against the Southern Kings on Saturday night.

Danny Wilson will be monitoring the fitness of Gareth Anscombe and Garyn Smith ahead of that game, both of whom were withdrawn during the first half in Bloemfontein last weekend.

Anscombe is confident he will be fit for Saturday, after receiving a bang to the head during a tackle, but Smith may have a slightly tougher task in getting match ready after suffering a sprained ankle in a freak collision with own team-mate Olly Robinson that could put his participation in the European semi-final against Pau in doubt.

Danny Wilson will name his team for this weekend on Friday at midday.

Southern Kings v Cardiff Blues, live on S4C, kick-off at 18:35 BST.
