Bristol’s Ryan Edwards joins on short-term loan

Cardiff Blues have today announced that Bristol RFC winger Ryan Edwards has joined the club on a short-term loan deal, effective immediately.

The 27-year-old will link up with the squad at the Vale Resort, and will be available for selection in the Anglo-Welsh Cup game on Friday as London Irish visit Cardiff Arms Park.

Born in Newport, Edwards played age grade rugby for the Dragons before heading off to the University of West of England. From there he was picked up by Bristol for the start of the 2011/12 season.

Since then he has made 66 appearances across the Premiership, Championship, European Challenge Cup and British and Irish Cup, scoring 18 tries in the process. Unfortunately he has found chances limited at Ashton Gate this season, and Lam has allowed the winger to head out on loan to get game time.

Speaking to the Bristol Rugby website, head coach Pat Lam said, “Ryan has been working really hard on the training field and he’s eager to play in a very competitive area for us, so the chance to feature at the Blues in the Pro14 is also perfect for Ryan’s development plan.

“Both players (Will Hurrell is joining Bath) are contracted for next season and we have a call back clause in the event of injuries to our backs. We believe this opportunity is very beneficial for the players and Bristol Rugby moving forward.”

He is highly thought of by his team-mates over the Bridge, with Wales prop Ryan Bevington describing him as “a very, very good player. He reminds me a lot of Liam Williams.

“He is an electric attacker who is deceptively strong and has a great set of wheels. For Bristol he is an unsung hero.  Around the club everyone rates him, but in a wider sense no one seems to be picking up on him.

“But they ought to be. People need to be taking a look at Ryan. He rarely has a bad game. He is someone who gives his all and never lets you down.”

With Blaine Scully and Alex Cuthert away for the international period, while there are question marks over the fitness of Matthew Morgan, Tom James and Dan Fish, the signing of Ryan Edwards is a shrewd one by Danny Wilson.

Now he just has to live up to the standards set by undisputed favourite loan player ever Olly Robinson!
