Opposition View: Connacht

Posted by

This week’s Opposition View comes from the guys at the Craggy Rugby Podcast (http://craggyrugby.com/) which covers Connacht rugby, get their thoughts on an underwhelming season for the Champions;

How has your season gone so far overall?

Connacht are 8th in the Pro12, P 12 W 4 L 8 PF 199 PA 258 TF 24 TA 30 TBP 3 LBP 2

Poor, overall, league a complete disaster, champions cup had some good moments with wins against Wasps and Toulouse but we missed a great opportunity to qualify from our pool.
What has been the high point?

Beating Wasps at home with a dramatic last gasp try and touchline conversion from Jack Carty.

And the low point?

The failure to even attempt a drop goal in the closing stages against Toulouse where three points was all that was needed. Also losing to the Dragons, that’s never good!

Who have been your standout player(s)?

Nobody really. A number of players have sustained solid form from last year such as John Muldoon and Tom McCartney. Others have sparked in patches and injuries and international call ups have disrupted the Connacht season of key players such as Kieran Marmion, Ultan Dillane and Bundee Aki.

What did you make of our game earlier this year?

Connacht 18-7 Cardiff: https://cardiffbluesblog.com/2016/11/29/connacht-18-7-cardiff/

Facile win, first time I can ever remember a Cardiff team coming to Galway and offering such meek resistance, also, it was the first time they have ever failed to register even a single point in the fixture. You guys are traditionally our bogey team.

What are your thoughts on Cardiff Blues this season?

Overall, good start but faded and we assume injuries have halted what had looked like real progress for the club.

Your prediction for Sunday?

Worried about us in the front row and at outside centre so predicting a Cardiff win, possibly by more than 7.

Thanks again to the Craggy Rugby Pod guys, and good luck to them ahead of the match!
