This week’s Opposition View is a return to Glasgow fan ‘The Pen'(@thepenGW) who offers his views on the Warriors inconsistencies, a successful European campaign so far and their impressive club captain.
How has your season gone so far overall?
Glasgow are 5th in the Pro12: W 7 L 5 PF 283 PA 239 PF 38 PA 27 TPB 5 LBP 3
Very up and down! Some greats performances and wins against Connacht, Leinster, Racing 92 twice and Leicester have been negated by very poor results against Scarlets, Ospreys and the drubbing we took at Thomond Park against Munster. We’re in the hunt for the play-offs but it could, and should it could be argued, be a lot better.
What has been the high point?
Beating Racing 92 home and away was tremendous but for me I’d have to go with the win against Leicester. Opening night of the Champions Cup and we destroy them like that? That was total heaven. it was probably one of the most complete performances that you’ll see from any team.
And the low point?
Defeat by Munster was bad but I’d have to pick the game against Ospreys. Probably one of the single worst performances I’ve ever seen from a Warriors side. We were second to everything and even then we were lucky to be runner up. It was like having 15 strangers on the pitch and the scoreline reflected that.
Who have been your standout player(s)?
A few to choose from here. Ali Price has really stepped up in the last 12 months and he’s now pushing hard to be the regular starting scrum-half. Over the last couple of months Finn Russell has stepped his game up and keeping Dan Carter in his pocket for two games in a row shows how good a player he is but for me it’s between Jonny Gray and Ryan Wilson. Gray is just a machine and he’s been one of the top performers in the league this season and Wilson is on the form of his life just now in the back row. He adds some real bite to the side.
What did you make of our game earlier this year?
Cardiff won 23-19 at CAP: https://cardiffbluesblog.com/2016/09/17/cardiff-23-19-glasgow/
Disappointing from my point of view. We looked on great form and that was probably one of the results we may live to regret at the end of season.
What are your thoughts on Cardiff Blues this season?
A bit like ourselves really. Very up and down. The start to the season was superb and it looked like you might have turned the corner but injuries have not been kind and the form has dipped a bit as a result. If results start to go the Blues way, there is nothing to stop them making the play-offs but I think a Champions Cup spot should be the main aim.
Your prediction for Sunday?
The synthetic pitch gives us no advantage given you have one! It’s really a must win game for both sides but I think the Warriors will win it because we have some form and momentum on our side after 4 straight victories. I’m going to say 27- 19 to Glasgow!
Thanks again to The Pen for his thoughts ahead of tonight’s game. A massive one for Cardiff, just hope the pressure of it doesn’t take away from what should be a cracking encounter between two naturally attacking teams on their favoured plastic surfaces. Come on Cardiff!!!
